A friend of ours is turning 50 this year and she’s not looking forward to it. So here’s a look at some inspirational and stylish women who are over 50 which might act as a reminder about why turning 50 can be fabulous!…

I asked our Luscious Lifers to give me suggestions for women who inspire them, so here’s the list so far, in alphabetical order.

Yes, there are some physically beautiful women on this list, but it seems that as we grow older, we don’t care for the superficial as much as we did in our younger days. It’s more about style, elegance, grace and good humour being attractive features, rather than bust size, height or weight.

Confidence, intelligence, strength of character, personality and persistence are the common thread for these spirited women, whose industries range across the board, from science and technology to arts and entertainment. Other descriptions include “followed their dreams”, “zest for life” and “an excellent example of a top business person”.

Dressing stylishly: Fashion suggestions

In general, unless you have the body of Daphne Guinness or the eccentricity of Iris Apfel, you might want to:

ensure you’ve got the right underwear and definitely invest in shapewear
reconsider wearing miniskirts, minidresses and anything clingy – perhaps combine with tights or thick stockings instead, and add in more softer layers and textures
put on a cardigan to reduce the “bare arm” look, and stick to long trouser lengths rather than shorts or capri pants
reduce cleavage and embrace more bold jewellery around your neckline instead
go for “classic” colours such as jewel tones, earth tones and pastels, eg. red, plum, navy, pale blue, emerald green, black, grey, white and cream – avoid anything garish such as fluro colours
stick to one main colour (eg. pink) with one base colour (eg. navy), especially with accessories, rather than multiple colours
think elegance rather than edgy, ladylike rather than trendy, chic rather than cheap.
