Luscious folk: Emma Isaacs from Business Chicks

Emma Isaacs - Business Chicks

Meet the luscious Emma Isaacs, happy wife, loving mother of three, and dynamic CEO of Business Chicks. I asked the lovely entrepreneur some questions about living lusciously, and this is what she had to say…

Luscious living

Business Chicks is now Australia’s largest network for women with over 30,000 members across the country. They produce an events program with past speakers including Sir Richard Branson, Dannii Minogue, Ita Buttrose, Olivia Newton-John, Sir Bob Geldof and many more.

Business Chicks also publishes a glossy mag, Latte, which is sent to the member base plus distributed throughout the Qantas lounges nationally. They’re all about getting behind great women and helping them see that anything’s possible when you have the right people around you and you back yourself.

What is your definition of “luscious”?

Time! Time to me is luscious. With a growing business and a young family (I have three daughters from eight weeks through to four years old) time seems non-existent.

I look forward to grabbing moments when I can luxuriate in a bath, pick up a great book, go to the shops and buy a bunch of beautiful flowers, have a cocktail with a girlfriend (or even just a conversation without a little person grabbing the phone!) – all those small, simple things that aren’t happening at the moment.

What motivates you to get up each morning?

I’m fortunate to be naturally motivated and determined. I can’t remember a day when I haven’t wanted to get out of bed. I’ve designed my life and built my business to make sure it provides constant challenge and inspiration and make sure that all the people around me feel the same.

I suppose that’s the beauty of having your own business – you get to choose the people you hang out with every day and I choose people that motivate me to want to be and do more.

What elements of lusciousness do you try to incorporate into your daily life?

I’m big on surprises and am always looking for ways to make people smile – whether that’s buying chocolates for someone, sending hand-written cards to friends and clients or taking my whole team to New Zealand or New Caledonia on surprise trips (yep, I’ve done that twice!).

At our wedding I wrote a personalised note to every single guest (all 140 of them) and when I was in labour with my first child I baked banana muffins for our midwife because I was worried she might get hungry. Surprising people and making others happy is my reason for living.

Who has inspired/continues to inspire you?

People who are brave inspire me. People who take risks and don’t care what others think of them inspire me. People who change mindsets inspire me.

Courage and authenticity are the qualities I find most inspirational. I gravitate toward people who are like this.

Do you support any particular charities or causes which you’d like to mention?

Sure do. We’ve raised over $2 million for various charities through Business Chicks. It has nothing to do with our core business but we have a membership base of over 30,000 women and we want to use this voice to make an impact.

Personally, I invest in The Hunger Project. I’m on the board and have also travelled to Uganda to see their on the ground work there through the Business Chicks Leadership & Immersion Program. Next year I’m going on another program with them and Business Chicks, this time to India.

Do you have any favourite style icons/people you look to for advice/are historically interesting?

My grandmother was always immaculately presented and took great pride in her appearance. She’s passed now but I often think she’d turn in her grave to see me run out the door with wet hair and no make up on!

I love Diane von Furstenberg‘s style – she was our guest speaker at a Business Chicks event last year. She’s so European and timeless and eccentric too – a great combination!

Any lust-haves on your wishlist?

I can cope with any amount of pressure and stress if I know there’s a holiday coming up.

We’re just back from Bali and my next trip is New York then New Zealand then India – I love having these trips in the diary. They motivate me to work hard so when I go on vacation, I can know I’ve earned my break.

How would you describe the style of your home, interior-wise and/or architecture?

At the moment our lives revolve around the kids and our style is all about keeping life simple. Our nanny goes to great measures to ensure we have systems – almost every item in our home has its place and I’m indebted to her for this level of organisation as it doesn’t come naturally to me.

Our home is warm with lots of photos, a few pieces of very special artwork and at the moment the furniture we invested a great deal of money in at the start of my husband’s and my relationship is in storage as the kids would ruin it in no time.

I try to indulge in fresh flowers every fortnight and love nothing more than candles burning and music playing in our space.

Any favourite items in your home or garden which you feel are particularly luscious?

I cherish our open fire and our bed!

What’s an ideal weekend for you?

An ideal weekend would include breakfast in Bondi (where the kids behave and the baby sleeps, or better still, someone else has them!), the coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte, long naps in the middle of the day, some time spent with my kids feeding the ducks at Centennial Park and getting fish and chips afterwards, a lychee martini or a great bottle of red at night with my mum, perhaps a movie in bed…
