*UPDATE APRIL 2015* I’m sad to report that actor Jonathan Crombie aka Gilbert Blythe from “Anne of Green Gables” has died in New York, aged 48, of a brain haemorrhage.
“Anne of Green Gables” starring Megan Follows as Anna Shirley and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert Blythe was my all-time favourite story growing up – I read LM Montgomery’s first book (published in 1908) in the series multiple times as well as the later books – and I still love watching the TV series. You too?
Every time I see Gilbert Blythe, my heart has a little flutter. I loved the Canadian TV movies – parts one (1985) and two (1987), but the third instalment (2000) – which completely deviated from what LM Montgomery had written – was rather dire.
The fourth TV movie (2009) starring Barbara Hershey as a much older Anne, didn’t really grab me either. But, of course, I watched them anyway!

If you’re looking for some escapism during your next day off, why not sit down with the Anne of Green Gables – Remastered Complete Collection DVD 8-disc box set (2012) and watch all of the Kevin Sullivan-directed versions? Or just start with the gorgeous original “Anne of Green Gables” from 1986 (which was the best) and go from there?
