Voyage en capitale: Louis Vuitton and Paris

Louis Vuitton
has been an iconic designer brand for years, constantly defining some of the world’s greatest fashion trends in not only clothing, but also luggage.

In an exhibition which has just come to a close in Paris, ‘Voyage en Capitale’ paraded the genius behind Louis Vuitton vintage designs.

Not only was it a representation of past work but showed how this iconic brand redefined ‘style’ over the past 150 years.

The exhibition combined Louis Vuitton’s most historic designer objects for us to ogle and dream about. It tracked a huge collection of heritage works including paintings, photographs and models, each on loan from museums all over the world.

This was a unique opportunity to see such a large collection of prized Vuitton history.

But the main focus of the exhibition was on how this brand defined it place in the world of fashion through its trunks and luggage.

From vintage tailor-made pieces to simple displays of the way in which Vuitton has created pieces that combine aesthetics, pragmatism and artistic creation.

Each piece truly is marvel to admire and assists in cementing the company as a design house ahead of its time.

With over 230 works on display, the exhibition paraded the many talents and productions of this huge fashion house and shows that there is more behind the brand than just its iconic luggage print.

You can visit the official website of the exhibition or simply watch the video below to get a little taste no matter where you are in the world.

While the exhibition has now closed and we may not have had a chance to see it in person, there is no doubt this fashion house still has many good years left of redefining our style forecasts.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Luscious Lifers should make their way to London from March 5, 2011 for a night of theatrical fabulousness.

Congratulations to our theatre producer friend, Daniel Sparrow, on the recent London launch of "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg". Daniel is a lovely, talented AND gorgeous chap (the trifecta!) and lives a luscious life, travelling the world producing marvellous shows and mingling with the great and good, so clearly we must show our support.

His latest production, with veteran theatre producer, Mike Walsh, stars fellow Australian, multi-award winning avant garde cabaret performer, Meow Meow, as Lola the narrator, Joanna Riding as Madame Emery, Carly Bawden as Geneviève Emery, and Andrew Durand as Guy, in a story about of teenage lovers torn apart by war, social obligation and family pressures.

If it sounds familiar, then you might be thinking of the 1964 musical film featuring a 20-year-old Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo. If feeling sentimental, you can purchase the restored version of the DVD from Amazon.

The Kneehigh Theatre Company is presenting this version, based on the film by Jacques Demy and with a score by the legendary Oscar and Grammy winning composer Michel Legrand, with lyrics translated by Sheldon Harnick.

It has been reimagined by director Emma Rice, the acclaimed Artistic Director of Kneehigh, creators of the West End hit 'Brief Encounter'.

It's doing try outs at Leicester's Curve Theatre (February 11-26, 2011), then opening in the West End of London at the Gielgud Theatre - previews from March 5, then officially on from March 22. Bookings are currently open until October 1, 2011.

Check out our photo gallery of the magnificent Meow Meow.

Learn more about the show from the official website or follow the news via their Umbrellas of Cherbourg page on Facebook. "The Age" also has a story about the launch, as does London Theatre

Australian made: 100 years of fashion

From now until January 23rd 2011 the National Gallery of Victoria will be hosting a unique exhibition showcasing Australia’s rich fashion history.

Presenting designs and original dress from 1850-1950, this exhibition showcases the way in which fashion became a rich and defining area in Australian culture over those 100 years. As the country was ‘coming of age’ and finding its identity, its creative outlets were influenced to follow suit.

As population grew, more demand on tailors and seamstresses did also, therefore motivating designers to create original designs and styles to suit the professional men and women. These designs went on to define Australia’s own iconic design styles.

Since people began settling in Australia, fashion and the way in which individuals presented themselves was of high importance. From presenting their wealth and importance to defining their new life abroad, this art form has been a highly effective outlet of self-expression.

The exhibition not only illustrates history’s changing fashion trends, but some of Australia’s most influential designers and retailers during those 100years of change.

Get a taste for some fashion history at the Australian Made: 100 years of fashion exhibition at the Ian Potter centre: NGV Australia at Federation square in Melbourne. It is situated on level two of the gallery in fashion and textiles gallery number 12. Entry is free.

Exhibition: Karl Lagerfeld photography

We all know he the head of top design house, Chanel, But not only does he design their ranges and shoots their campaigns, Karl Lagerfeld is putting on an exhibition in Paris of his stunningly beautiful photographs.

The exhibition includes some incredibly breathtaking shoots he has done over the years at Chanel, as well as some of his own personal photography.

This exhibition gives a rare insight into what the fashion genius sees, by looking through the lens at an image direct from his perspective. What better way to experience art and all its beauty?

Hosted by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, also gives an insight into some of Lagerfeld’s talents for not only photography, but writing novels such as  ‘The beauty of Violence’ and ‘Metamorphoses of an American’- each book focusing on his muses Baptiste Giabiconi and Brad Kroenig.

At a glance, his photographs are simply stunning, but upon closer inspection, this collection of work has a deeply hauntingly and beautiful feeling to it. It truly showcases the beauty of the male and female forms, how their bodies can present such conversations of elegance.

While most photographs are in black and white, their timeless grace truly intoxicates its admirers and, without knowing, you are pulled into Lagerfeld’s personal fashion world.

This is the power of what fashion photography can do. But most importantly, it demonstrates the power Karl Lagerfeld has to hypnotize his admirers.

If you do miss the exhibition, but are exploring Paris be sure to check out Karl Lagerfeld’s own photography bookshop ‘7L’ beneath his personal photography studio.

Known for showcasing some of Australia’s hottest brands and up-and-coming designers, the L’Oreal Festival is a must for lovers of all things chic.

What sets this festival apart from others is that it is not simply a set of runway shows for society’s fashion elite, various functions are put on through the city such as public parades at Central Pier in Docklands and Federation Square, breakfast business seminars and beauty workshops at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins Street and, naturally, after parties galore!

The best part? As long as you can outrun your neighbour in your Jimmy Choos, anyone can purchase tickets to shows and be a fashion critic for the night.

Check out the full LMFF 2010 Program or for a change of pace, try some these other options offered by the festival.

Sidewalk Shows
Alongside the runway shows, The City of Melbourne and the Herald Sun newspaper will be supporting local designers such as Kookai, Review and Forever New in hosting sidewalk shows throughout the festival of their upcoming Autumn/winter seasons free in Federation Square.

This is a fantastic way to see what will be hitting the stores near you and where to rush and buy the next ‘it’ dresses before everyone else!

Beauty Workshops
As the proud sponsor of the festival, L’Oreal Paris (alongside Marie Claire magazine) will be hosting a series of beauty and make-up workshops in the Grand Ballroom of the Sofitel on Collins Street.

Get tips from industry professionals on autumn make-up trends that suit your complexion, and the best application techniques.

Tickets are only $35 and you even get a goodie bag of Marie Claire and L’Oreal products worth $100 (we all love a fashion freebie!).

For further information visit the official LMFF website  and book tickets. No doubt we will see you there, goodie bag in hand and eyes on the runway!
