Hotel des Arts, San Francisco

Have you ever wanted to sleep in an art gallery?
To be surrounded by the most amazing contemporary art that it has the possibility of seeping into your dreams as you lay below it?

Well a little hotel in San Francisco’s French Quarter now gives you this opportunity! The boutique Hotel des Arts has a series of rooms all individually decorated by some of the world’s top emerging contemporary artists.

For the past year, they have been given full artistic license on a room each and the result is both amazing and overwhelming.

Each room is unlike any other with incredible wall murals using a range of methods from stencil spray painting to detailed freehand painting. The biggest problem you will have is deciding which room to book!

While the rooms can be heavily decorated, the experience of sleeping among such incredible art is an honor in itself and the experience-one you will surely not forget.

The hotel also offers an art gallery of its own, so you can absorb as much art and culture as possible during your stay. Their aim at Hotel des Arts is for art not to be used as decoration, but as a full interactive experience. One look at these rooms and you know they have succeeded.

You can contact the hotel via the website, or take some time to look through the rooms and read about the artist’s inspirations and objectives.  It will make the experience even more unique when you know the story behind each room.

San Ysidro: A Luscious fave is a Travel+Leisure 2010 champ!

Congratulations to San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California where we once had a delicious holiday - they have been voted the best resort in the US and Canada, and one of the top four hotels in the world by Travel + Leisure magazine (up from 64 last year).

We will never forget the incredibly comfortable bed, the way the fire was lit for us so the room cosy when we returned from dinner (bed pictured right), or the outdoor spa and accompanying outdoor shower (despite being right next door to the bathroom which opened out onto the terrace). YUM.

The history is equally compelling, with many celebrities, past and present, coming to stay, such as John and Jackie Kennedy who had part of their 1953 honeymoon here (you can even stay in their cottage) and Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier who were married on the lawn. Swoon over the history!

See the official San Ysidro Ranch website or learn more about them on the T+L website. To read about them and the other winners, see the T+L World's Best Hotels 2010 story and start planning your next trip!

Learn more about Montecito and neighbouring Santa Barbara, or just amuse yourself with some map-fantasy-time, below (we like to work out where we would go on for day trips in the surrounding area).

Famous residents:
Oprah, John Cleese (although perhaps not post-divorce!), Al Gore, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Rob Lowe all have homes in Montecito, whereas Jennifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, George Michael, Jennifer Lopez, Jane Fonda, and Ellen DeGeneres have (or have had) homes in Santa Barbara.

Wikipedia has a more extensive list to enable your celeb-watching (Montecito and Santa Barbara).

Kudos Villas – Hepburn Springs, nr Daylesford, Victoria

Looking for a place to unwind? A place to live it up in ultimate style and luxury while being in a beautiful serene town in the heart of Victoria’s spa country? A place to spend some quality time with that special someone for a special occasion, then why not try the Kudos Villas in Hepburn Springs, Victoria.

A personal favourite of mine, I actually spent part of my honeymoon there.

We were extremely impressed with the spa in the middle of the lounge room and the gorgeous love seats to snuggle up on while sipping wine and staring at the open fire.

A definite must for romantics or anyone wanting some special time with their partner.

New Parisian chic: Le Royal Monceau

When you picture French style, something very iconic and stereotypical comes to mind. The traditional provincial decorating style with wooden paneling, white highlights and touches of silver.  While this romantic image is loved and epitomised by people the world over, this country is taking a step in a new style direction.

Le Royal Monceau opened for the first time in 1928 and was considered the height of Parisian society and accommodation. So you would expect it would be full of charming Paris decorations, opulent chandeliers and decorations to challenge Versailles?
Well not anymore.

After 2 years of renovations, this magnificent hotel is now paving the way in modern French style. This is the hotel that will set the trends for luxury for years to come. After being taken over by the Raffles Hotel Group, it has been redecorated and modernised to suit a developing city.

Le Royal Monceau is putting forward a new Parisian message about what real French modernity should look like … artistic, delicate, open, poetic”. One glance at the incredible developments and you cannot help but agree- if this is the future for French style, it’s both exciting and elegant.

Originally this hotel was famous as the place to be for emerging artists and intellectuals in Paris. It was swarmed with locals and foreigners basking in the elegance of its salon bar, amazing garden and billiard room.

So grand was its reputation that it has had many a famous foot pass through its doorway including Hemmingway, Josephine Baker, General Eisenhower, Walt Disney, Michael Jackson and Sofia Coppola. Clearly the place to be seen in Paris!

Le Royal Monceau continues to maintain its high standard of excellence in design and its reputation as the place to be, stay and dine in this amazing city. Now it is simply paving the way as the new Parisian chic.
