Eat, Pray, Love to find your balance

It was a few months ago when I was at the movie theatre with my best friend and I saw the trailer for the new Julia Roberts film - ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ (an adaptation to film of the bestselling novel by Elizabeth Gilbert).

I’m not sure if it was the images of mouthwatering Italian food, the beauty of complete solace in India or the colours and happiness of the people in Bali, but I felt an emotional pull towards the story of a woman trying to find her place in the world.

I must have been living under a rock when the book was released (which can be the only reason I didn’t jump on the bandwagon of its huge popularity), I have since endeavored to read the novel before the much anticipated, film is released.

For those of you who were also living under the same rock, the story follows Elizabeth as she embarks on a year of travel and search for inner balance.

After a messy and emotionally draining divorce, she sets off to spend 3 months eating her way through Rome’s supply of pasta.

After finding bliss in consuming all she possibly can (and extending her waistline further than expected), she moves to India to a sacred Ashram to meditate and come to terms with her series of failed relationships and deep depression.

Finally, she concludes her year in Bali spending her days with an old medicine man and finding the true balance between love and devotion.

Perhaps it is due to where I am emotionally in my life at the moment, or perhaps it is my ingrained desire to search the world and experience its many fruits, but I was pulled into Elizabeth’s story more than I had anticipated.  So true were many of her observations about love and life and how the two can become so intertwined that we can begin to lose our own sense of identity.

As I look at my friends and loved ones, I can see those who are following their own path and those who are becoming wrapped up into an expectation set upon them.

As for myself? I am at that dreaded fork in the road where I have to choose which of the two paths to embark upon. As women, I do believe that these journeys can become so easily expected of us.

The constant saturation of rom-coms and unrealistic iconic images put us under constant scrutiny and pressure to perform to a certain level and live up to a pre-prescribed identity.

What Elizabeth Gilbert showed us, is that the key is to find a balance in your life. Without the balance between devotion and love (be it spiritual or not) an individual can lose momentum and direction in their life.

So I have compiled a list, with the help of this novel to finding your own balance:
  • Give yourself some time! You need to allow yourself time to simply be with yourself. Know yourself and sort through your worries. This is such an important thread throughout the book- even when you think you are all sorted (or given yourself a quick check over); allow more time than you anticipate. This can be done every morning before your shower, or devote half a day a week, to be alone and process your thoughts.
  • Healthy body, healthy mind. While often food can be a source of emotional comfort, its important to remember that by giving yourself healthy food you are helping your body function efficiently. Try to indulge in fresh sweet fruits like strawberries or pineapple instead of chocolate when you need a sugar fix, and drink herbal teas and plenty of water to flush out impurities. Even when you are feeling your worst, these foods will help boost your mood.
  • Do your own thing. As silly as it may sound, sometimes you need a hobby of your own! Engage in a yoga class once a week, take up photography, join a book club or even try to learn another language. It’s one hour a week you give yourself to explore a creative outlet that offers alternative goals to your professional life.
  • Be open to love. Life is about allowing yourself to be touched and sometimes hurt by love. But without it, life can be pretty bland. If you have been hurt before, deal with the emotional issues it caused but approach each new relationship with an open mind and heart. Let yourself go and remember that you have to be open to love for it to find you.

Whether you pick up the book, or go to see the film, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia has the possibility to touch and enlighten you if you allow it. Find a message from Elizabeth’s journey of discovery and be open to life’s possibilities with an open mind and heart.

For more information about the novel, or her latest release ‘Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage’, visit Elizabeth Gilbert’s official website or watch the film to be released later this month.

As part of the experience, be swept up in the music of the film and purchase the Eat Pray Love : Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with amazing artists such as Florence and the machine (the song 'Dog days are over' is featured on the trailer below).

We also have a full photo album dedicated to some beautiful screen shots from the movie. So be sure to have a look through it on our Facebook fan page and be inspired by the amazing colours, beauty and diet-destroying foods the film offers.
