Luscious flowers

I've spent so much on flowers that I've forced myself to start ordering seeds and trying to grow them myself. Sensible, yes, but hard to be patient!

My ultimate favourites are peonies and roses - see my piece on our Domestic Goddess page.

When it comes to arrangements, I tend to do 2-3 colours max, predominantly reds and pinks, blues, purples and white, reds and white, or pinks and white.

I have a good collection of plain glass vases but also love finding more unusual containers, such as shot glasses tea cups and egg cups for small blooms, old soup tins, watering cans and vintage boxes, as well as traditional jugs and small garden pots.

There's something fab about browsing through op shops and flea markets for prospective containers.

Luscious blossom

It's springtime at our farm in Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula (Victoria, Australia) so we're thrilled that our property is bursting with life. Learn more about "my" Red Hill and surrounds in our Culture Vulture section.

In particular, the orchard is delighting us daily with blossoms and the memory of the copious amounts of delicious apples we were able to pick earlier this year.

For months we enjoyed apple pie, apple crumble, apple sauce and every other variation of apple-ness!

We haven't seen much fruit from the other fruit trees (probably because the house was empty for sometime before we took it over) but hopefully the work that's gone into pest control will help this season.

Below is a little sampling of blossom photos (mostly cherry blossom) to add some lusciousness to your day. I'm also rather enamoured by blossom prints, so there are a couple of those as well.

Hip cups with a conscience

Ever wanted to have a cuppa with a member of the Royal family? How about a hot bath with a film star?

Well thanks to a cute German company Donkey Products those ideas have been pulled together in the form of the cutest little teabags going around.

Dip in a bag of Audrey Hepburn, brew a warm cup of Karl Lagerfeld or sip from Donatella’s pool - all part of the prêt-a-porTea range!

Each purchase gives you an array of 5 different celebrities from classic film or rock stars to even royal family members. Now each tea time can now be spent with the famous guest of your choice!

If you are more of a coffee fan, we have an eco option for you that will ease your conscience. We all know the damage take-away coffee cups cause on the environment, as they are unable to be broken down through recycling measures. When you consider how many cups you go through a week, then think about how many people around the world grab a cup each morning on the way to work, the numbers are staggering.

An Australian company has now come up with a new idea- the ‘ECO CUP’  is a porcelain coffee mug designed to look distinctively like the take-away cups we buy. This way, you can take the guilt away from enjoying your morning brew without standing out from the crowd.

byocup: Luscious eco cups!

We're all for a bit of eco-friendliness, but when they make items look luscious as well, then it's win-win for us! Check out these red, white and black variations of the byocup (as in BYO cup).

Considering we throw away 500 billion (yes, billion!) cups a year, isn't it high time we made a change? Each of the byocups are made of silicone in the shape of the traditional paper coffee cup and are fully recyclable so you don't have to feel guilty next time you order your next rain-forest-friendly coffee.

Hey, byocup folk, perhaps you could do a signature Luscious pink-and-red cup for us?

More info from the byocup website where you can order online, as well as their byo cup Facebook page, of course.

More examples of the cups in our byocup photo gallery.

Lush and green: Green clean

Our grandmothers have passed down many housekeeping tips over the years, particularly ones that use simple household items such as vinegar and bi-carb soda.

Not only do these products work but are free of chemicals – turning our homes into soothing sanctuaries.

Here are some recommended top-shelf pantry items:

  • Soda water: removes red wine and bloodstains
  • White vinegar: soak new purchases in a 50/50 vinegar-water solution to stop colours running – particularly good for washing new denim jeans for the first time.
  • Lemons: push used lemons into the cutlery cleaner of your dishwasher for a lovely fresh scent when you wash.
  • Vanilla extract: add a few drops to a cloth and wipe down the inside of your fridge to deodorise it.
  • Eucalyptus oil: removes sticky labels
  • Salt: add a tablespoon of salt to every wash to prevent colours running.
