David Stark Design: Wood Shop

For the month of February, 2012, New York’s beautiful Haus Interior will be transformed into a beautiful, quirky concept store: Wood Shop.

David Stark Design has set the standard for the pop-up store worldwide, and now founder and event producer David Stark is taking the concept a step further, popping up inside Haus Interior in Nolita, Manhattan.

The flagship store of New York-interior designer Nina Freudenberger, Haus Interior is known for sourcing beautiful, functional and quirky pieces from both emerging and established talent. Wood Shop takes that and pushes it a little further.

Wood Shop is all about pushing the boundaries between the home and the shed. Crocheted paint tins, wooden wine bottles and pencils declaring ‘I like you. A lot.’ are just some of the suprising but dearly welcome limited edition pieces available for the month of February.

Everything is inspired by what can be found in a woodshop: wood, tools, a little romance among the sawdust. Beautiful, functional and a little bit quirky meet up and have a raucously friendly dinner party in this limited edition collaboration.

These lovingly designed pieces will make you think twice about your home, your shed, and everything in between.

In addition, a product line will be available nationally through the Haus Interior website, and will include beautiful items such as cards, Valentine’s Day gifts, and home décor items.

For more beautiful Wood Shop images, go to our Luscious Wood Shop gallery, or head on over to David Stark's Facebook page for more fun, unexpected everyday inspiration.

The HAUS INTERIOR FLAGSHIP STORE is located at 250 Elizabeth Street (between Prince & Houston) in Manhattan, NY.

Anja Herbstritt: Dream paintings

Anja
Herbstritt, pictured right, came late to painting. She was living in a beautiful region in Germany when a visiting friend, inspired by the landscape surrounding her house, encouraged Anja to capture it on canvas.

Everyone can paint, she told her. So Anja bought oils, brushes and canvas, and began her first painting at age 40.

As her confidence and love for the art grew, she began to long for paintings by the great artists, Modigliani, Turner, Monet, Kirchner, to hang on her walls.

Alas, she, like many others, couldn't afford them. So she painted them herself, applying her own self-taught style to their famous paintings.

Anja's paintings are beautiful and dreamlike, like a memory of a painting rather than a copy. I'm not much of an art critic, but these paintings take me to another place. They remind me of beautiful literature and all the places in Europe that I haven't been to yet.

You can see more of Anja's beautiful paintings at her website, and in our ANJA HERBSTRITT photo gallery in our Luscious collection.

Chandelier lusciousness

I love the idea of having a glamorous chandelier (or multiple ones!) particularly in a more unusual spot like a kitchen or bathroom. I've definitely got it on my wishlist for my dressing room when we build our new house and intend to start with the two I inherited from my grandparents which are sadly sitting in boxes until that time.

And although I do love some of the more modern and unusual shapes, I'm a traditionalist at heart, so the choices below reflect that. Here are some faves (many of which come from frenchbedroomcompany.co.uk and seem incredibly well priced from what we can tell). See the full photo gallery here.

PHOTO GALLERY: Beautiful things

Kitchen wishlist: Smeg, Nespresso and KitchenAid

A red retro Smeg fridge and dishwasher, red Nespresso coffee machine, and red KitchenAid mixer are the top items on my kitchen wishlist.

So when I looked at sad, old standard white fridge that I've had for about 15 years and realised it still might be a while before I can afford the dream house with the dream accessories, I decided that I could at least have some luscious browsing time.

Mind you, I will need to have TWO houses - one with the red accessories, and one for the French off-white country kitchen. Mmmm!

Here's my red wishlist:

  • Smeg FAB28 271L retro refrigerator with ice compartment
  • Smeg DF6FABR retro style dishwasher in red
  • Nespresso Citiz coffee machine with milk frother, in red
  • KitchenAid Professional 600 6Qt Stand Mixer - Empire Red

Check out our photo gallery of several Smeg, Nespresso and KitchenAid appliances in a range of colours.

Assouline "Books" Scented Candles

The thought of serenity in a leather armchair while getting engrossed in a classic novella has just become even more appealing with Assouline’s range of Books Scented Candles.

Created by one of the world’s sensory experts, the light and fine perfumes of Bibliothéque, Wood and Leather candles evoke the fragrance and atmosphere of a fantasy library.

They perfectly encapsulate the pleasure of reading through the enigmatic scent of the paper of an old manuscript, the warm distilled scent of red cedar wood bookshelves, and the soft smell of comfortable leather couches and book covers.

The text on the glass of the candle is a quote by Sacha Guitry:

“With all the things I know, one could write a book … Although, one might also say that, considering all that I don’t know, one could create a library.”

Luscious loves...Sarah's House

Sarah's House on HGTV

Haute homes

Vintage has been the buzzword in fashion for some time now, so it comes with little surprise that home furnishings have followed second-hand suit.

London-based interior design duo, Tshuka, have created a unique range of exquisite cushions using classic couture materials such as vintage Hermès scarves sourced from Paris.

The cushions, which are gloriously oversized (82cm x 82cm), are also a little (gloriously) overpriced at $1,375. But let us remember that the Hermès scarf knows no peer with their incomparable silk prints and hand rolled edges.

The cushions are available to scatter at your whim from www.tshuka.com.

Luscious gift giving: Happy Housewarming

At Luscious, we are big on gift giving. Recently however, I was posed with the dilemma of what to buy a friend-who-has-everything for a housewarming gift. When it comes to domestic enchantment, I admittedly miss the mark a little, and while I may not have yet resorted to using my oven as storage, I would much prefer to buy candles than a chopping board.

This outlook of housekeeping also means that there are a few (odd) little luscious luxuries I feel no house is quite complete without. I therefore decided to look a little closer to home (mine) for inspiration. Hope this helps those of you posed with the same dilemma.

Kate Spade playing cards:
A house isn’t really complete until there is a spare deck of playing cards in the kitchen drawer along with the set of steak knives. They are the perfect accompaniment for nights in, practicing poker faces over cocktails. Visit www.katespade.com.

A basket of scones:
So they may not last past morning teatime, but a basket of home baked delights is a gift no Luscious lady would dare turn away. Get in touch with your inner housewife, don your apron and attempt my mum’s secret recipe (the secret is lemonade). See the recipe on our Fabulous Foodie page.

A Times New World atlas:

No bookshelf or coffee table could be complete without a world atlas. An atlas is a great inspiration to daydream and have a little armchair-adventure. Our pick is the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World (Times Atlas of the World Comprehensive Edition) which is quite frankly the most comprehensive portrayal of the world available and more.

The Atlas is relied on and trusted by governments around the world and international organizations including the UN.

Nightstand carafe:

A nightstand water carafe is perfect for quenching your thirst from midnight to morning. This lovely Villa Maison hand blown carafe, with separate water glass, has the word 'Eau' engraved. Also a nice addition to a desk or guestroom (especially if you ever intend to stay). Available from Indulgence Collection and Mon Coeur.

Luscious gift giving: Tea for two

On a recent musical tour of Paris, a very luscious friend returned home with a souvenir of Mariage Fréres Tea for me. I was instantly intrigued by what I have since learnt is a French Art form!

Around 1660, on behalf of King Louis XIV and The French East India Company, the ancestors of the Mariage Brothers sailed to distant lands on a quest for new and exotic flavours. This began the tradition of excellence in taste and creativity and the birth of the French Art of Tea.

My favourite - Marco Polo Rouge - is a distinctive fruity and flowery red tea. Sharing a pot of this was just as luscious as sharing a bottle of wine!

To experience what this amazing tea has to offer, visit www.mariagefreres.com.
